LP using Anambra governorship poll to test popularity – Abure
The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has announced that the party will use the November governorship election in Anambra State to test the party’s level of preparedness and popularity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Abure stated this in Awka, Anambra State capital, on Saturday at a forum organised by an organ of the party, Directorate of Mobilisation and Integration, for governorship aspirants to meet with their delegates ahead of the primary election next Saturday.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of LP, Obiora Ifoh, in Abuja on Sunday.
In attendance were the only two aspirants of the party who bought the LP governorship forms – Dr George Moghalu and John Nwosu.
Abure, who was represented by the national women leader of the party, Mrs Dudu Manuga, also urged the aspirants to accept the outcome of the primary election and support the eventual candidate to have a formidable front ahead of the November poll.
He said, “We want to use Anambra to test what 2027 will be. Labour Party has grown beyond a briefcase party. We are in all the states of Nigeria and Abuja and we are getting ready not just for Anambra but for 2027.
“After the primary election this Saturday, no one is permitted to be angry. We will all join hands to emerge in the main election in November. Let us not be weak, let us not biker, let us all stand strong, be united and nothing will be impossible for us to achieve.
“This forum is to bring the aspirants together and make them integrate with the people they want to govern. We will plant LP in every polling unit. What is happening today in Anambra is crucial for our victory in 2027.”
After Abure’s speech, the two governorship aspirants also addressed members of the party.
In his speech, Moghalu insisted that the major problem of Anambra was that the people had lost confidence in the government.
He said, “People no longer trust the government, security has collapsed, and thugs are used to enforcing the tax. If the government is doing the right thing, people will pay taxes without being chased about. Tax can also be collected electronically.”
Moghalu also pledged to rebuild Anambra State and bring the government closer to the electorate.
