Anambra LG renames secretariat after ex-NEC chair Nwosu
The authorities of Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State have renamed the council’s administration building after the late Chairman of the National Electoral Commission, now Independent Nationals Electoral Commission, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu in recognition of his profound contributions to Nigeria’s democracy and development of the council.
The chairman of the council, retired Captain Casmir Nwafor made the declaration on Friday during a commendation ceremony to celebrate the life and achievements of Prof Nwosu at the local government headquarters in Ajalli.
The event also attracted attendees from various sectors, including national, state and local government officials, educators, community leaders, women and youth groups, friends and well-wishers who came to pay their last respects to the late icon of democracy.
In his address, Nwafor said, “Prof. Nwosu’s dedication to education, and public service transcends his achievements and lifelong contributions to Nigeria’s democracy, particularly his role in the historic June 12, 1993 elections.
“His unwavering commitment to transparent electoral processes set a standard for future generations. He wrote his name in gold and his footprints will remain indelible on the sands of time.
“The local government is committed to preserving his legacy to serve as a permanent reminder of his contributions to the country and our community. We also called on the Nigerian Senate and the governor of Anambra State to immortalise his memory.”
In his remarks, the Chief of Staff to the governor of Anambra State, Mr Ernest Ezeajughi stated that the recognition of Nwosu was a poignant reminder of the impact one individual can have on a community and beyond.
Ezeajughi highlighted the efforts of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration in upholding his legacy and urged attendees to be inspired by the exemplary life of Prof. Nwosu and continue in the spirit of service, education, and community development that he embodied.
The deceased’s son, Nnaemka Nwosu said his father was an esteemed scholar whose work transcended traditional academia but was also instrumental in developing initiatives which played an essential role in repositioning the community and the entire local government for the better.
He thanked the council chairman and the attendees for their love and urged the people of Ajalli to sue for peace in honour of his father’s memory.
Earlier, the Anglican Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Revd Dr Samuel Ezeofor, represented by the Vicar of St. Mark’s Church, Ajalli Archdeaconry, Ven Benson Nwachukwu Ekwueme in his short message charged the people to live a life of integrity and while praying for the repose of the deceased consoled the family to take solace in the fact that Professor Nwosu live a exemplary life worthy of emulation.
Various dignitaries, including former political office holders and local government staff, paid heartfelt tributes to Prof. Nwosu and celebrated his legacy with special prayers and good wishes for the most distinguished electoral reformer in Nigeria.
The highlight of the event was the unveiling of a memorial statue and a valedictory session in honour of Professor Nwosu.
