Kanmi Ajibola, a member of the Osun State House of Assembly representing Oriade Constituency, has initiated an appeal against a Federal High Court ruling in Osogbo that was against him.

The court’s decision prevented him from continuing to offer free legal services to indigent individuals facing criminal charges now that he is a lawmaker.

Ajibola, a lawyer and former Chairman of the NBA Ilesa Branch, had filed a suit numbered FHC/OS/CS/42/2023, seeking permission to maintain his pro bono legal practice while serving as lawmaker.

However, Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel dismissed Ajibola’s request, citing constitutional provisions that prohibit public servants from engaging in income-generating activities outside their official duties.

Ajibola has filed an appeal with the Court of Appeal in Akure, contesting the ruling on seven grounds.

He argues that the lower court failed to consider the significant public benefit derived from his pro bono services, which he has provided selflessly since 2000.

Ajibola maintains that he sought legal clarity after receiving threats and believes the court misinterpreted the Constitution, overlooking his adherence to public service obligations. He is seeking to overturn the decision, emphasizing the importance of his work in serving the greater good.

Ajibola emphasized his record of securing the exoneration of wrongfully accused individuals across the country, showcasing the significant impact of his NGO, the Prisoners Aid Initiative.

By supporting government efforts to address prison overcrowding, he noted that his organization has demonstrated its value in the pursuit of justice.

Through his appeal, Ajibola reaffirms his dedication to championing the rights of marginalized communities, persisting in his quest for justice and legal aid despite the legal hurdles he faces as a result of his public service.
