Lagos University Students Protest Imposed N10,000 CBT Fee Amid Financial Difficulty
Lagos State University students are in an uproar over the sudden introduction of a compulsory CBT fee by the school management.
The contentious fee, amounting to N10,000, was unexpectedly added to the students’ portal on July 6, sparking widespread discontent and frustration among the student body.
The rationale behind the new fee remains unclear, but students have vehemently opposed the move, taking to social media with the hashtag ‘#SAYNOTOEXTORTION’.
An accompanying graphic rallies students to take a stand against what they perceive as an unfair imposition by the school authorities.
It reads, “The student populace finds it unfair to pay the LASUCBT Fee as we do not know the details behind it. We employ every student to speak up and fight for their rights as it is unjust and unacceptable.
“This is an opportunity to stand up against creating unnecessary burden on students of the institution through the introduction of unnecessary fees, and we must all come together to fight against it and say no to students’ extortion!”
A student at the institution, speaking on condition of anonymity due to fear of retaliation, revealed that frustration is widespread among students regarding the new fees.
The source said many students are frustrated, but are reluctant to speak out for fear of facing repercussions, including loss of studentship.
It was learnt that the school management has introduced additional fees, including a counselling fee of N5,000 and a forensic fee of N1,500.
The LASUSU Students’ Union has issued a statement, signed by Comrade Ibiade Benjamin, Public Relations Officer, advising students to withhold payment of the newly introduced CBT fee until further notice.
The union recognises that many students are already struggling financially and believes that the additional fee would only exacerbate their difficulties. By urging students to refrain from making payments, the union aims to protect their interests and alleviate potential financial hardship.
The statement reads, “Sequel to the introduction of the new fee for the Computer Based Test (CBT). After careful consideration and discussions with various stakeholders, we Strongly advice that Students should not pay this new CBT fee at this time.
“Many students and their families are already facing financial challenges and this additional fee imposes an extra burden. More importantly to note is that, this new fee was introduced without prior notification or consultation with the students body.
“Greatest Lasuites, your cooperation and patience are highly appreciated as we engage the school management to work towards a fair and reasonable outcome. We understand that these are trying times for us but we are assuring you again that your interest is our topmost priority.
“We also seek your continuous support and trust as we work tirelessly to address your grievances to the appropriate quarters. Keep eye on our official channels as we would communicate out next line of action as soon as we hear from the management.”
