Kano Police Ban Durbar Festivities For 2025 Eid-El-Fitr Amid Emirship Dispute, Cite Security Concerns

The Kano State Police Command has announced a ban on all Durbar activities during the 2025 Eid-El-Fitr celebrations, citing security concerns and the need to maintain public order.

He emphasised the importance of ensuring a peaceful and secure environment throughout the festivities.
“Following credible intelligence reports of orchestrated plans by miscreants and their sponsors to exploit the Durbar for disruptive activities, the Command, in consultation with the Kano State Government and other key stakeholders, has decided to prohibit all Durbar activities across the state,” CP Bakori stated.
He explained that security assessments had revealed growing tensions and potential threats linked to the Durbar, which could lead to unrest.
As a result, the police, along with other stakeholders, opted for prohibition as a precautionary measure.
CP Bakori assured residents that adequate security measures had been put in place to ensure the safety of the Eid prayers at the designated grounds.
He urged worshippers to comply with security guidelines, including avoiding the carrying of unnecessary objects that could cause suspicion. He also warned against horse riding (Kilisa), car racing, and reckless driving.
The commissioner advised parents and guardians to caution their children against being used by subversive elements and to ensure adherence to public order.
“As we celebrate, let us remember that peace is paramount. We must put aside our differences and work together as law-abiding citizens for the progress of our state and nation,” CP Bakori urged.
The police command further called for continued collaboration with security agencies and encouraged residents to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
This development follows the decision of the 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, to cancel the Sallah Durbar in the interest of peace.
Earlier, Ado Bayero had requested police protection for the Sallah celebrations, but concerns over potential violence arose due to preparations by the 16th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi.
Sanusi had begun his arrangements after receiving a directive from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The Sallah Durbar is a significant cultural event for the Hausa people, and the Kano monarchy has long been known for preserving this tradition.
However, recent tensions within the royal family have created uncertainty around this year’s celebration.
