Kano milk market hits N200m daily sales
The Cow Milk Marketers Association at Wanbai Market, Kano State, has reported a rise in daily sales to N200m.
This, the association said, was made possible after the state government and the Islamic Development Bank rehabilitated the market.
It, however, called on the government to ensure the completion of all the 40 milk collection centres across the state, to enhance storage and exportation of their products.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, the chairman of the association, Alhaji Muhammad Alaramma, said the intervention by the government and the IsDB had improved the market, as members got customers even from neighbouring states.
“The business of cow milk in Kano is booming, following the intervention of the state government through the State Agro-Postoral Development Project, which is being financed by the Islamic Development Bank, as our members are making N200m sales daily,” he said.
He said the IsDB, through the state government, donated to the association over 100 generating sets and 200 blending machines which it distributed to over 200 members.
He said the milk collection centres awaiting inauguration across the state would help store the milk for international market sales.
“Most of the 40 milk collection centres across the state have been completed and fully equipped for a long time, however, we don’t know why the government refused to commission them.
“If the 40 milk collection centres are fully operational, I’m betting you that in the next few months, we will be transporting our products to international markets.
“Our major challenge is the lack of storage facilities. So, if we have adequate cold rooms, we will reduce wastage,” the chairman said.
He said with the milk collection centres operational, their businesses would improve, while the over 20,000 members across the state would benefit.
He called on the state government to support members of the association with cooling vans to transport the commodity, adding that they transported over two million litres of cow milk from various parts of the North.
He also called on the Islamic Development Bank to install solar power in the market to reduce expenses on diesel and petrol.
