David Umahi, the Minister of Works, has announced plans for the construction of a flyover as a permanent solution to address the recurring flooding issue on the Abuja-Lokoja highway.

During an inspection tour of ongoing construction on the road, Umahi expressed his commitment to finding a lasting solution to the problem.

Joined by Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello and ministry directors, Umahi emphasized the significance of the Abuja-Lokoja road, which connects several regions of the country.

He highlighted its role as a major link between the southwest, south-south, southeast regions, the Federal Capital Territory, and the northern parts of Nigeria.

Umahi indicated that a flyover spanning the flood-prone area at the Koton Karfe section, which covers about 1.6 kilometers and would require five flyovers, could effectively prevent flooding issues. He mentioned plans to propose this solution to the President and underscored the ministry’s focus on achieving permanent resolutions to infrastructure challenges.

The minister encouraged contractors to use concrete for the project, citing its durability and maintenance-free characteristics. He also promised a broader adoption of concrete roads across the country, as they can last up to 50 years.

Governor Bello praised Umahi for selecting Kogi State as his first field assignment and assured him of the state’s full support. Bello stressed the importance of infrastructure development, asserting that projects like road construction would offer more benefits to the people than short-term palliatives.

Bello commended President Bola Tinubu for appointing Umahi as Minister of Works and expressed confidence in Umahi’s capabilities to deliver on the administration’s projects. He assured that the road construction would be designed to withstand flooding and endure the test of time.
