Just In : Tinubu Considers Reappointing Controversial Buhari’s Minister to Replace Lalong, Details Emerge
President Bola Tinubu is reportedly considering the re-appointment of the controversial former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, to replace Simon Lalong as the Minister of Labour and Employment.
The President has engaged in separate consultations with Lai Mohammed and Aminu Masari, the former governor of Katsina state, according to sources within the presidency. The discussions revolve around the imminent vacancy created by Simon Lalong’s resignation from the ministerial position.
Sources within the presidential villa disclosed that President Tinubu’s deliberations with the two prominent figures of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are centered on identifying a suitable replacement for Lalong.
Lai Mohammed gained notoriety during his tenure as Minister of Information and Culture under ex-President Muhammadu Buhari. His decision to ban Twitter (now X) for nine months drew significant criticism, particularly from Nigerian youths on social media.
During Mohammed’s time as minister, the ban on Twitter lasted from June 2, 2021, to January 13, 2022.
The ban was initiated after the microblogging platform censored former President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweets and temporarily suspended his account.
President had used the platform to caution the people of the southeast against actions that might lead to a repeat of the 1967 civil war. President Tinubu has accepted Simon Lalong’s resignation, with plans for a valedictory session for the former governor of Plateau state expected at the next Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.
In a related development, President Tinubu recently took decisive action by dismissing five directors appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in the aviation and aerospace development ministry.
The move signals a shift in leadership and raises questions about the potential restructuring of key ministerial positions under the new administration.
