Just In : President Buhari to bestow GCFR, GCON on Tinubu, Shettima ahead of May 29
The President-Elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu will next Thursday be conferred with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR) while the Vice President-elect Kashim Shettima will be conferred with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The investiture of the two highest national honours on the in-coming leaders is part of the Presidential Inauguration programme of events, according to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and Chairman of the Presidential Transition Council (PTC), Mr Boss Mustapha.
Mustapha said the theme of the inauguration of the 16th President and Vice President is: “Nigeria: Better together”.
Mustapha, who described the upcoming event as historically significant to the country and the international community, particularly Africa because of the democratic values and lessons in nationhood, also gave a breakdown of events, starting with the unveiling of programme of activities at the Press Conference and closing with the inauguration parade/swearing-in and post-inauguration luncheon on Monday, May 29, 2023.
“All events will be broadcast live on all major stations and streamed on various social media platforms. Detailed information including accreditation arrangements, would be provided by the Media and Publicity sub-Committee.
“So far invitations have been sent to the Presidents and Heads of Government as well as Heads of International Organisations. We are also glad to report that many of these invitees have confirmed attendance in person.
“Ladies and gentlemen, this event is historic for our nation and I enjoin every one to embrace this moment as proud Nigerians. It is a moment made for togetherness, unity, peace and progress.
“Finally, let me assure everyone that adequate arrangements have been made for the safety and security of all people throughout the inauguration period”, he said.
Responding to a question on protests against the inauguration of the President-elect and Vice President-elect by some opposition elements, Mustapha said: “Let me say without any fear of contradiction, there will be an Inauguration on 29th of May. We will proceed with the inauguration of President-elect Tinubu and the litigation will continue. Our Constitution and Electoral Act have dealt with that. Our laws are sacrosanct
