Just In : Popular Presidential Candidate Suspended From Party (DETAILS)
The Board of Trustees (BoT) for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has taken the decision to suspend Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who was the party’s candidate in the February 25 presidential election, due to allegations of engaging in activities contrary to the party’s interests.
Additionally, the BoT has also suspended the National Working Committee (NWC) of the NNPP.
In response, a fresh set of national officers has been appointed, led by Dr. Agbo Major as the interim National Chairman and Mr. Ogini Olaposi as the interim National Secretary, along with 18 other members.
This suspension, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), will remain in effect for a duration of six months. The decision to suspend was arrived at through a voice vote by party members during a special general assembly held at Rockview Hotels in Apapa.
It is worth noting that prior to this, the NWC of the party had already announced the suspension of the party’s founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, and the National Publicity Secretary.
Babayo Muhammed Abdulahi, the Secretary of the BoT, addressed the media at the conclusion of the meeting in Lagos, explaining that Sen. Kwankwaso was accused of unauthorized interactions with President Bola Tinubu, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Mr. Peter Obi from the Labour Party (LP). These interactions were conducted without proper authorization from the board. As a result of this, Kwankwaso’s status as the national leader of NNPP has been revoked by the board.
Abdulahi further expressed that the suspension of the NNPP founder, Dr. Aniebonam, was a clear violation of the party’s constitution. He highlighted that Aniebonam had stepped down as the BoT chairman and a new chairman, Dr. Chief Tope Aluko, had been elected. Furthermore, he conveyed that the actions of the NWC invalidated the pre-election Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kwankwasia Movement, The National Movement (TNM), and the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF).
The acting National Chairman, Dr. Agbo Major, also shared his perspective, affirming that his team would focus on mending the divisions caused by the suspended NWC members. Major assured that the NNPP would continue to uphold its people-centered ideology, welcoming all displaced members back into the fold.
The special general assembly meeting, attended by the new NWC members and participants from all corners of the country, marks a significant moment in the evolution of the party.
