Just In : Police Inspector shot dead by armed men
Inspector Ngoro Edim, a police officer with the Cross River State Police Command, was shot and killed by unidentified assailants last night.
It was gathered that the gunmen Vanguard gathered came to abduct a store owner while also robbing people on Federal Housing Estate Road 5, Calabar Municipality LGA. They whisked their victim away while executing the police officer who they believed was a threat to their operation.
According to reliable sources, he was at Federal Housing Road 5 when the store owner was kidnapped, and because he was present at the location, the criminals thought he was a threat to their operation, so they shot him and fled with the victim.
He was rushed to a hospital along the Calabar-Calabar road, but he didn’t make it, as he was certified dead there.
It was learnt that Insp. Edim, a father of five from Agbaragba village in the Ikom local government area of Cross River state, was originally with B Division attached to Area Command but posted on special duty at Tinapa.
Speaking with the Police Relations Officer , Cross River state Police Command , SP Irene Ugbo who confirmed the death of the Inspector, said his assailants will never go free adding that they have already launched a manhunt for his killers.
Irene said : ”He was not at his duty post during the incident , he only went to get something at a store near the scene of operation , and the criminals saw him as a threat , they decided not to take the risk of allowing him walk .
“But I can assure them that they won’t go unpunished , as we will surely get them , because never again will a police officer be killed , maimed , within a month we have lost two policemen , but we want those who are enemies of peace to know that we are ready for them,” she said.
SP Ugbo also clarified the issue of illegal detention and torture of suspects in their custody, particularly with special units like the Anti Cultism and Kidnapping Squad, ACKS, saying that no one was held in any of their facilities without a competent court’s order.
She went on to say that, aside from those who were still being investigated for major crimes such as kidnapping and murder, no one in their custody was being held illegally.
