Three Cameroonians, including a soldier, were among 11 persons rescued by the Nigerian military from transborder bandits, SaharaReporters has learnt.

The Cameroonian soldier and two other compatriots were reported to have been captured on Monday at a border post mounted by the Cameroonian Gendarmerie.

The bandits who reportedly fled Zamfara in Nigeria’s Northwest region were said to have found a haven in a forest bordering Adamawa, Taraba states and the Republic of Cameroon.

Currently, the bandits are largely domiciled in the Toungo Local Government Area of Adamawa State, from where they raid communities, according to the council chairman, Suleiman Ahmed Gangkuba.

Gangkuba said the kidnapped victims, including a Cameroonian soldier were rescued through a joint military-vigilante operation.

At the moment, the local government has been overwhelmed by sporadic attacks by the bandits, Gangkuba added.

Residents of the area told our correspondent that the bandits are hiding in the forest adjoining Karemti, Adaboro and Kogin Baba axes from where they launch attacks on market days, in homes and on farms.

The spokesperson for the police in the state confirmed the rescue to SaharaReporters on Thursday.

“A Cameroonian soldier and two fellow nationals were rescued alongside five indigenes of Taraba state. They were brought safely to Toungo town,” Suleiman Nguroje said.

Similarly, the bandits recently sacked Dawo and 11 other communities, killing two persons.

A surviving eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “The bandits in their hundreds move from market to another market, killing and carting away wares.”
