JUST IN; Gunmen attack Police station, kill corporal
Gunmen have once again targeted a police station in Anambra State, in Oba, Idemili North Local Government Area.
This marks the third attack on law enforcement in the state in recent weeks, following similar assaults in Nnewi and Nnobi in August, where some officers tragically lost their lives.
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, the attackers struck again, leading to the death of a police corporal whose identity has not yet been disclosed.
Anambra State police authorities confirmed the incident, stating that the officer was killed after the assailants, suspected to be separatist elements, hurled a petrol bomb into the station.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, while reacting to the attack said: “The suspected armed secessionist group started shooting sporadically in an attempt to gain entrance to the police station and threw petrol bombs at the security facility which made some of the offices catch up with fire including the Oba Civic Center.
“Unfortunately, a police corporal who was fatally wounded paid the supreme price, while the fire was put off with the help of other police officers on duty and the joint security responding team.”
Ikenga reported that a police-led joint security operation, including the Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and other agencies, launched a coordinated offensive this morning in Oba and surrounding areas.
The Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, condemned the attack, describing it as an invasion of security facilities and an act of hostility toward security forces—an assault on the nation’s very core. He pledged to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are swiftly brought to justice.
