JUST IN; Court clears Popular House of Reps member of murder, orders Govt to pay N25m damages
The Federal High Court in Abuja has said that Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, the former leader of the House of Representatives, is not guilty of murder like the Kano State government said. The court decision came on December 5, 2023, in case number FHC/ABJ/ABJ/CS/714/2019. The judge, Justice D.U. Okorowo, said Doguwa didn’t do anything wrong.
The court also said that the Kano State Government has to pay Doguwa N25 million because of the trouble they caused him. Doguwa, who also heads the House Committee on Downstream Petroleum, represents the Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency in Kano.
The whole issue started when the NNPP government in Kano accused Doguwa of being involved in the deaths of over 15 people, mostly NNPP members. Even though the old APC government in Kano tried to end the case and say Doguwa was innocent, the NNPP government brought it back up, leading to Doguwa getting arrested and taken to court.
After the police in Kano arrested him and then let him go on bail, Doguwa wanted the police to look again at why they arrested him. He said they didn’t have a good reason. He also sued different parts of the government, like the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Governor of Kano, saying they violated his rights.
This court ruling is a big win for Doguwa, affirming his innocence and holding the Kano State Government accountable for damages incurred during the legal ordeal.
