Nigeria’s political space has been filled with news of developments in Rivers State where the Governor of the State, Siminalayi Fubara picked a war against his political godfather, Nyesom Wike.

The political rift has led to “mass defection” and a “gale of resignations” by members of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. Recently, about 26 lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly defected from PDP to the ruling party in the center, All Progressives Congress (APC), and the defection is unconnected to the political imbroglio between Wike and Fubara.

Consequence of the same political rift, about nine Commissioners serving in the Governor Fubara-led Rivers State Executive Council have tendered their resignation letters.

The gale of resignations which has been rocking the state at the state executive level has now gotten its way to the grassroots following the shocking resignation of Dr. Darlington Orji, the Chief of Staff to the Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State, Nwanosike Samuel. He cited “personal conviction” as the reason for his resignation.

Dr. Darlington’s resignation is the first coming from the local government level, and this may raise another concern on whether there is a crack in the loyalties of the local government chairmen to Nyesom Wike or some of the loyalists of Governor Fubara are also declaring war against the local government chairmen who are in support of Nyesom Wike at the local government.
