The actor, born on February 29, 1928, in North Kensington, West London, emphasized research as a crucial element in his acting approach, contributing to his credibility on screen. His personal experiences, including the loss of his son Paul to an overdose and the devastation caused by a house fire, influenced his performances.
Ackland’s retirement in 2014 marked the conclusion of a distinguished career, allowing him to devote time to his extensive family. In 2020, he shared his insights in a video, offering reassurance and perspective to a younger generation grappling with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown.
