At least nine people have been killed following a series of Israeli air strikes on Yemen’s capital and a port city.

According to Houthi-controlled media, the strikes were carried out early Thursday after Israel intercepted a missile fired by Houthi fighters towards its territory.

Israel’s military said it targeted “military sites” belonging to Houthi forces. “The targets attacked are used by the Houthi forces for their military operations,” it stated.

Al Masirah TV, run by the Houthi movement, reported that seven people were killed in Salif port, while two others died in strikes on the Ras Issa oil facility in Hodeidah province.

“The enemy launched four aggressive raids targeting the port … and two raids targeting an oil facility,” the outlet said.

Yemen’s SABA news agency confirmed the strikes, reporting that employees at the Ras Issa oil facility were among the casualties.

Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said the strikes also hit ports and energy infrastructure in Sanaa, in response to Houthi missile launches.

Hussain al-Bukhaiti, a pro-Houthi commentator, told Al Jazeera that Israel had conducted about 13 strikes on Thursday.

He described the attacks as retaliation for Yemen’s weekly assaults on Israeli targets and shipping linked to Israel in the Red Sea.

“Those attacks came as retaliation from Israel against Yemen because Yemen has been conducting on a weekly basis attacks either on Israel directly or on the Red Sea on any ship that is actually aiding the Zionist state of Israel,” al-Bukhaiti said.

He added that the Houthi campaign of solidarity with Palestinians would continue despite civilian casualties in Yemen.

“Yemen has said clearly that it will not stop these attacks unless the Israeli regime will stop its attacks against Gaza, lift the blockade and withdraw from Gaza,” he said.
