International Law Association hails declaration of Afe Babalola Day
The International Law Association has congratulated the Chancellor and Founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), on the recent declaration of October 18 as Afe Babalola Day by a Nigerian monarch.
On August 23, 2024, the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba (Dr) Adeyemo Aladesanmi (III), issued a royal proclamation to honour Afe Babalola.
The monarch declared, “The Pride of Ado Ekiti, Aare Afe Babalola, should be honoured and celebrated with pomp and pageantry on every 18th day of October, starting in 2024, and this shall henceforth be celebrated annually.”
This royal recognition honours Afe Babalola, the Founding Patron of the International Law Association, Nigeria, and a distinguished member of the Bar of England and Wales.
Babalola, a renowned lawyer, has received numerous accolades, including the African Man of the Year in Food Security in 2014 and 2024.
Afe Babalola to share life experiences on digital TV show
As the Aare Baamofin of the Yoruba Empire, the former Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, and former Chairman of all Pro-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, has made significant contributions to Nigerian education through the founding of ABUAD.
In recognition of this honour, the President of the International Law Association, Nigeria branch, and a United Nations Independent Expert, Prof. Damilola Olawuyi (SAN), sent a letter of congratulations to Afe Babalola.
The letter read in part, “Aare Afe Babalola’s remarkable journey as a renowned advocate, farmer, philanthropist, educator, bridge builder, author, and global citizen is an inspirational example of everything we strive to do as international lawyers to advance global peace, to empower, and to give back to the poorest in society.”
Expressing the ILA’s pride in Babalola, Olawuyi said, “We are so proud of our Patron, and we earnestly look forward to organising a World Press Conference on October 18 to celebrate Afe Babalola Day.”
Founded in 1873 in Brussels, the ILA is a learned society committed to the study, clarification, and development of international law, as well as the promotion of peace, equity, and justice worldwide.
