Wenesday 15th of December, 2021 will remain ever green in the history of the 9th Imo state House of Assembly, as the governor of Imo state Senator Hope Uzodimma signed Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) bill sponsored by the member representing the good people of Njaba state Constitutency Hon. Dr Uju Onwudiwe into law.
Following the above the good people of Imo state, through this medium expressed their happiness over the bill, hence it affects greatly the welfare of the public at large.
The VAPP Bill initiated by the Member representing Njaba State Constituency, Hon Uju Jovita Onwudiwe (Igolo Njaba), was passed into law to help proffer solutions to numerous Imo citizens who are being molested and abused on daily basis, has received Commendations within the state and beyond. It is a domestication of federal Act that has already been enacted.
Recall, 27th July, 2021 was the day 9th Imo State House of Assembly passed into law, a bill chiefly sponsored by member representing Njaba State Constituency, Hon Uju Onwudiwe, seeking for the elimination of violence in private and public life, as well as prohibiting all forms of violence, including physical sexual, psychological, domestic, harmful traditional practices, discrimination against persons and to provide maximum protection and effective remedies for victims and survivors and punishments of offenders.
This piece of legislation, which is an improvement on the penal and criminal code in relation to violence, seeks to eliminate violence in private and public life, prohibit all forms of violence including physical, sexual, psychological, domestic, harmful traditional practices, discrimination against persons and to provide maximum protection and effect remedies for victims and punishment for offenders.
Having been assented to, by the Governor of Imo State His Excellency Senator Hope Uzodimma, the bill now becomes a Law of Imo State and as such, enforceable on offenders. This milestone achievement advocated by the First Lady of Imo State through the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Vulnerable Groups and in collaboration with Hon. Dr Uju Onwudiwe, the chairman House Committee on women affairs and vulnerable affairs, would tackle and eliminate, to the barest minimum all forms of violence against humanity.
