“Hunger pushed me into music” — Segun Johnson
Nigerian musician Segun Johnson has opened up about the circumstances that led him into music, revealing that economic hardship was the driving force behind his career choice.
Speaking in an interview with media personality Teju BabyFace, Johnson recounted his humble beginnings and how the harsh realities of life in Nigeria steered him toward music.

When asked whether music had always been his dream or when he discovered it as a viable path, Johnson replied candidly in Yoruba:
“Ebi ni, hunger ni. If you are in Nigeria, you don’t have a choice,” meaning hunger compelled him to pursue music.
He further delved into his humble beginnings, highlighting how he used to be a backup singer for many top-rated acts until opportunities presented themselves. During this period of his life, he faced even a greater challenge of seeing some of his clients while performing as a backup singer.
The singer’s revelation highlights the struggles many young Nigerians face in navigating their career paths amid widespread economic challenges. Johnson, who has since built a successful name for himself with his lively and engaging performances, remains a relatable figure for many who find inspiration in his journey from hardship to recognition.
