How I Survived Political Oblivion In Kwara – Lai Mohammed
The Immediate past Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has revealed the challenges he faced in maintaining his political relevance in Kwara State after his initial defeat in the gubernatorial election two decades ago.
Following his loss, he remained in the opposition and was disparaged as a ‘Lagos Politician’ by his political opponents in Kwara until 2015 when the APC, through a merger with other opposition parties, secured victory at the state and federal levels, granting him a political resurgence.
Speaking to reporters after a warm welcome reception in his hometown of Oro, Irepodun Local Government Area, Lai Mohammed reflected on how he overcame his early political struggles in the state.
He recalled that after his defeat, some advisers suggested that he should connect more with his people in Oro to dispel the notion that he was disconnected from them due to his association with Lagos.
He took their advice and initiated an annual Ramadan Talk in Oro, using it as an opportunity to meet with his political associates, which eventually played a pivotal role in his political resurgence.
Lai Mohammed also praised the religious tolerance of Oro, stating that it is one of the few communities in Nigeria where both Muslims and Christians coexist harmoniously.
He recounted how, due to renovations at the Muslim praying ground, he held the Ramadan Talk at St Andrew’s Catholic Church in Oro for three consecutive years, showcasing the town’s inclusive and accepting nature.
The National President of Oro Community, Prof. James Bojuwoye, commended the former minister for his contributions to the community and his demonstration of religious tolerance and harmony, which have left a lasting positive impact on Oro.
