An Ondo State Chief Magistrate Court, sitting in Akure, has remanded a man James Emmanuel for allegedly raping a 55-year-old woman, Mrs Deborah Abiodun to death.

Emmanuel, 35, was arrested by the state police command for killing the woman who was his co-worker at the Oke-Odu Area, of Akure on January 17, 2024.

It was gathered that the defendant, after allegedly raping the victim to death, hit her head with a stone and dumped her corpse inside a waste pit.

He was later charged to court and arraigned on a two count bordering on murder and rape.

At the proceeding, the police prosecutor, Anwana Josephine told the court that the suspect committed the offence on the 17th day of January 2024 at about 11.00 pm.

The charge against the defendant read, “That you James Emmanuel ‘m’ on the 17th day of January 2024 at about 11.00 pm at Ilere, on Ijare Road, Akure in the Akure Magisterial District, did rape Deborah Abiodun ‘f’ aged 55 years old and thereby committed an offence, contrary to Section 357 and punishable under Section 358 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

“That you James Emmanuel ‘m’ on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned Magisterai District did kill one Deborah Abiodun ‘T’ by hitting her with a stone on her head and dumping her corpse inside a waste pit and thereby committed an offence, contrary to Section 316 and punishable under Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006”.

Ruling the Chief Magistrate, F.A. Aduroja ordered that the defendant be remanded in the Correctional Centre in Ondo town and adjourned the trial till March 27, 2024.

Similarly, a 27-year-old man, Adenuga Eniola was arrested by men of Ogun State Police Command for allegedly raping a co-worker, identified as Faith Jude to death at Lafenwa, in the Abeokuta South Local Government Area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami had earlier said that the suspect confessed to the crime during investigation.

She said, “On the 18th of January, 2024 a case of murder was reported at Okuta-Elerinla Police Station, the complainant stated that on the 17th of January, 2024, she went to her farm to feed goats and fowls, she discovered that her worker Mrs Deborah was not in her apartment.

“She explained that after searching for her to no avail, she asked one James Emmanuel ‘m’ who is also a worker on the farm about the deceased whereabout, but he claimed not to have seen her, her remains was later found in a waste pit.

“The Police carried out investigation, which led to the arrest of James Emmanuel ‘m’ aged 35yrs who during interrogation confessed to have raped the deceased after taking four bottles of beer and six sticks of cigarette.

“He added that he killed the woman out of fear that she might expose him and dumped her corpse inside a waste pit in the farm premises.”
