Following more than two months away from legislative activities, federal lawmakers reconvened in Abuja, eager to address pressing national issues that have arisen during their absence.

Initially scheduled to return on September 17 after a break that commenced on July 23, lawmakers extended their recess by an additional week.

With their return, attention is focused on critical topics that have emerged, particularly the soaring prices of petrol, which have risen dramatically from ₦617 to ₦898 per litre since July.

In some areas, the cost has reached ₦1,000, raising public concern over the lack of regulatory action.

Legislators are expected to discuss potential interventions, including calls for the reinstatement of the petroleum subsidy.

Additionally, lawmakers face scrutiny over their responses to recent flood disasters, particularly in Maiduguri, where they pledged financial support.

Critics argued that legislative measures should go beyond donations to investigate the causes and accountability for such disasters.
