Delta unveils whistle-blower policy to expose substandard projects
The Delta State Government has launched a whistle-blower policy aimed at empowering citizens to report substandard and poorly executed projects across the state.
The Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, announced the initiative at a press briefing in Asaba on Wednesday, stating that the move aligns with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s commitment to ensuring value for money in public projects.
As part of the initiative, residents can send text messages, WhatsApp messages, pictures, and videos of substandard projects to a dedicated whistle-blower hotline at 09169978305.
Aniagwu emphasised that the policy provides an avenue for Deltans to participate actively in governance by holding contractors and government officials accountable.
“We are launching this whistle-blower line to ensure that our people, who live in their communities and see these projects firsthand, can alert the government to any form of substandard work,” he said.
According to the commissioner, reports have already started coming in, less than 24 hours after the hotline was made public, with concerns raised about some projects failing to meet required standards.
“We are taking this very seriously, and action will be taken against both contractors and government officials who fail in their responsibilities. Governor Oborevwori has made it clear that value for money is non-negotiable,” Aniagwu added.
The commissioner warned that no contractor would be spared, regardless of political ties or personal relationships with those in power.
“Even if you share the same surname with the governor, you must deliver quality work. The only way the governor will recognize you is by ensuring that the state gets value for its money,” he said.
Aniagwu assured whistle-blowers that their identities would be protected, stressing that the policy is designed to expose individuals or agencies attempting to shortchange the state.
“If a contractor feels that the allocated budget for a project is insufficient, they should communicate with us officially. However, cutting corners or delivering below-standard projects will not be tolerated,” he warned.
He described the whistle-blower line as the “hottest line in Delta State” and reiterated the government’s determination to take immediate action on reported cases.
