Governor hails commissioner for returning N100m excess funds
In an exceptional display of accountability, the Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has commended his Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Tajo Othman, and the school uniform distribution committee for returning N100 million in unspent funds from a N2 billion budget.
Arewa PUNCH reports that the funds had been allocated for the production of 798,000 uniforms for Primary One pupils.
Speaking at the launch event held at the Kano Government House, Governor Yusuf described the committee’s actions as a hallmark of integrity and transparency that aligns with his administration’s values.
He emphasised that their God-fearing decision to return the excess funds demonstrated patriotism and a commitment to the prudent use of public resources.
The governor praised the quality of the uniforms distributed and assured the public that this initiative would be an annual program.
He also announced plans to provide computers to secondary schools across Kano State, equipping students with digital literacy skills to prepare them for a competitive future.
In a press statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Yusuf said: “The honesty displayed by the committee led by Alhaji Tajo Othman is a testament to the values of accountability and transparency driving our government.
“This N100 million returned to the state coffers will now support further projects to benefit our people.”
The event also highlighted Governor Yusuf’s appeal to wealthy individuals and corporate organisations to contribute to education development in Kano State.
“Even small contributions can make a significant difference in transforming lives,” he said, underscoring his administration’s ongoing efforts to revitalise education.
The Kano State Nigerian Union of Teachers Chairman, Comrade Baffa Garko, also hailed the governor’s dedication to education reform, pledging the union’s full support for all initiatives aimed at uplifting the sector.
The event featured a mock Executive Council session, where pupils deliberated on state issues, and a quiz competition on the role of social media in nation-building.
The governor awarded N100,000 to winners in three categories and N500,000 each to the coaches of the mock council session, further demonstrating his administration’s commitment to innovation and youth empowerment.
“This initiative underscores the Yusuf administration’s dedication to accountability and the role of education as a cornerstone for Kano State’s progress,” Garko further stated.
