Alex Otti, governor of Abia, has appointed Benson Ojeikere, former permanent secretary of the government house, as the new head of service for the state.

Ojeikere hails from Edo state.

In a statement on Tuesday, Otti said Ojeikere, who was initially posted to Abia as a youth corps member in the late 90s, “distinguished himself as the best Youth Corps member and was subsequently granted automatic employment by the government of the time”.

“Over the years, he has served diligently in the civil service, steadily rising through the ranks. Notably, he was also among the best in the Permanent Secretary examination category,” the governor said.

“Our administration is motivated by a commitment to transforming governance and fostering a robust civil service.

“We aim to build a system where meritocracy triumphs over mediocrity, and where the best and brightest can rise to the top, regardless of their ethnic backgrounds.

“As Mr. Ojeikere assumes his new role, I urge all Permanent Secretaries and Civil Servants to extend their full support and cooperation to him.

“I would also like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the outgone Head of Service, Dr. (Mrs) Ngozi Queen Obioma, for her exemplary leadership and significant contributions to the Abia State Civil Service.”

In his reaction, Ojeikere said he was “still in shock” over his latest appointment, adding that although he has worked very hard since he joined the Abia civil service, he never thought it was possible to rise above the rank of a senior director, let alone a permanent secretary.

The newly sworn-in HoS thanked the governor for “allowing himself to be used by God to do what no person would have imagined was possible in any state civil service in Nigeria”.

He also pledged to justify the trust reposed in him by repositioning the state’s civil service.
