Government threatens to close 2000 schools over lack of accreditation
The Anambra government has threatened to close about 2,000 schools in the state over questionable accreditation status.
Paul Nwosu, the state’s information commissioner, spoke of the matter in a statement on Thursday.
He said the state discovered about 2000 unregistered schools during a recent pre-resumption evaluation.
Nwosu said the affected schools would face “dire sanctions” and “risk of closure” if they do not get the required approvals from the state ministry of education.
“The government of Anambra state is concerned that about 2,000 unaccredited/unapproved schools are operating across the 21 local government areas in the state,” the commissioner said.
“This is unacceptable, given the priority that Governor Chukwuma Soludo, a first-class academic himself, has accorded quality education.
“Setting up and running a school without requisite accreditation and approval is an indication that the school is not operating in accordance with the standards set by the government through the ministry of education.”
Nwosu said the government has directed all the affected schools to obtain registration requirements from the ministry of education and take immediate steps to comply before schools resume.
The commissioner added that the list of approved schools will be sent to local government education departments for monitoring.
