Government Orders Civil Servants To Refund Excess February Salaries Or Face Sanctions

The Niger State Government, in collaboration with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Niger State Council, has instructed civil servants who received multiple salary payments in February 2025 to refund the overpayments.
SaharaReporters learnt that beneficiaries have until March 2025 to return the excess funds or risk being excluded from future salary payments.
Additionally, defaulters will be subjected to penalties in line with civil service regulations on financial misconduct.
SaharaReporters gathered that while some civil servants were overpaid, others had not received their February salaries.
“All civil servants that received multiple salaries in February 2025 are hereby directed to immediately refund the overpaid amount to Niger State Government Salary Account,” the directive stated.
“The affected officers should ensure the inclusion of their name and control number in the narration OF his teller,” it further instructed.

The directive is in a statement jointly signed by Comrade Idris A. Lafene, State Chairman of NLC, and Comrade Ibrahim Gana, State Chairman of TUC, on Tuesday.
Additionally, the circular mandated that a hard copy of the refund receipt be submitted to the Treasury Unit of the Ministry of Finance. Affected staff can do this individually or through their branch union.
“Those who opt to use Point Of Sale (POS) tellers should ensure they make a photocopy of the teller immediately to avoid loss of record by ink fading,” the circular emphasised.
The government stressed that failure to comply with the directive within the stipulated deadline would result in non-payment of salaries.
The statement also clarified that this circular “supersedes any previous directives on the subject matter.”
