FRUSTRATING THE SPIRIT OF LABAN -Pastor Isaac Olutimehin
TEXT:
Genesis 29:15 KJV.
And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be?
*MESSAGE*
☆☆☆ Laban was the uncle of Jacob, being Jacob mother’s brother.
☆☆☆ Jacob ‘stole’ Esau’s blessings and ran away from their village home. He ran to another town to hide in Laban’s house.
☆☆☆ Many people thought that Jacob requested to be paid wages for serving Laban, No, not all. That’s not what the bible says.
☆☆☆ If you read our text for today again, you will discover that Jacob volunteered to serve Laban. Laban was the one who suggested he would be paying Jacob wages for serving him.
☆☆☆ Come to think of it, there was no need for Laban to pay Jacob for taking asylum in his house. It was expected that Jacob would be helping out one way or the other without expecting being paid.
☆☆☆ However, left for Jacob, he would be satisfied with Rachel as wages for his services but Laban insisted on paying him extra wages in addition to the wife he loved.
☆☆☆ Beloved, this will now lead us to the main business for today.
☆☆☆ There is a spirit called the spirit of Laban. It is a spirit of deception. The spirit that makes you look comfortable in your comfort zone till you lose focus.
☆☆☆ The spirit of Laban may not deny you food but you will never be satisfied.
☆☆☆ The spirit of Laban will make you labour so hard for others but no time to settle down to build yourself or plan for your tomorrow.
☆☆☆ The spirit of Laban will make you rely on others. You will hardly believe that you can do anything on your own.
☆☆☆ This same spirit of Laban will make you to have the feelings that your success in life depends on the support or assistance you get from people.
☆☆☆ Anyone operating under the spirit of Laban will never believe in himself. Not confident of himself.
☆☆☆ Beloved, if someone is operating under the spirit of Laban, he may not be poor but he will never be rich either.
☆☆☆ Such an individual can never have enough. Always managing to survive.
☆☆☆ You will remember that Jacob got the full blessings of their father, Isaac but Esau got only a remnant. However, when Jacob and Esau met, hear this👇
“And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself” – Genesis 33:9.
☆☆☆ Esau had become so rich such that all the gifts Jacob packaged to welcome him didn’t mean anything to him anymore.
☆☆☆ Beloved, Esau who got a remnant of blessings, had more than enough; to the extent that he came with 400 body guards. Read Genesis 33:1.
☆☆☆ When someone is operating under the spirit of Laban, he can easily be carried away by little gifts he’s being offered. If care is not taken, such gift offer may even end his life.
☆☆☆ Read the story of the young and old the prophets in 1 Kings 13. The old prophet offered the young prophet food and the young prophet immediately forgot the warning of God, he ate and he died.
☆☆☆ Beloved, the spirit of Laban can block the reasoning of a man so much that he will be so comfortable in his comfort zone.
☆☆☆ Such an individual will be afraid to take risks. He will be so afraid of the unknown. The little privileges he enjoys will block his vision.
☆☆☆ Now see this, Laban defrauded Jacob after serving him 7 years for Rachel as agreed. He now gave him Leah, that was fraudulent. Laban now told Jacob to serve yet another 7 years if he actually wanted Rachel as a wife and Jacob did.
☆☆☆ Beloved, Jacob had served Laban a total of 14 years and Rachel was now given to him as wife.
☆☆☆ Can you imagine that Jacob still willingly decided to serve Laban for yet another 7 more years!! Making a total of 21 years serving under somebody.
“And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years”* – Genesis 29:30
☆☆☆ Beloved, if you discover that things are not really turning out as expected for you, you may need to examine your life and those who surround you.
☆☆☆ You may be in the midst of Laban and being tormented by the spirit of Laban.
☆☆☆ The spirit of Laban will make a man to think that making progress in life is a sin. Such an individual will be quick to say: Little with contentment is a great gain. Quoting 1 Timothy 6:6.
“But godliness with contentment is great gain” – 1 Timothy 6:6.
☆☆☆ He will suddenly become a bible scholar to remind you that after all, Paul said👇
“Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content” – Philippians 4:11.
☆☆☆ Such a man would have forgotten that the same bible says👇
“And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth” – Genesis 1:28.
☆☆☆ The spirit of Laban will never allow him to claim the promises of God in 3 John 1:2👇
“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth”.
☆☆☆ Since the spirit of Laban has blocked his vision, he has no future plans, neither will he remember that God has a plan for his future.
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” – Jeremiah 29:11 ESV.
☆☆☆ Such a man has no trust in his own ability. He would have written himself off. Forgetting what the bible says👇
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” – Philippians 4:13.
☆☆☆ Beloved, anyone operating under the spirit of Laban will surely fall short of the expectations of God for his life.
☆☆☆ The spirit of Laban is a spirit of stagnancy. Such people usually have same story, year in and year out.
