Fire guts one-storey building in Lagos
A fire incident that gutted a one-storey building in the Lekki area of Lagos State on Thursday left property whose worth was yet to be ascertained destroyed.
PUNCH Metro learnt from an incident report signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, that the fire started at about 1 pm.
Photos of the fire scene obtained by our correspondent showed the roof of the building destroyed and the windows of the affected floor shattered.
Similarly, household items like furniture, air conditioning systems, and utensils among others were destroyed by the fire.
The LASEMA perm sec noted that the cause of the fire could not be ascertained as of the time of carrying out the rescue operation while stating that no casualty was recorded in the incident.
He said, “Upon the arrival of the LASEMA Shark Response Team at the incident scene, it was discovered that a one-storey building was engulfed by fire.
“Further investigations at the incident scene could not ascertain the cause of the inferno as of the time of this report.
No casualties were recorded at the incident scene. No injuries were sustained as a result of the incident.”
He added that the intervention of emergency responders prevented the fire from escalating.
“Prompt intervention of LRT and other responders present at the incident scene successfully curtailed the inferno. The inferno was contained from escalating to adjoining buildings,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
PUNCH Metro reported on Wednesday that a twin fire incident on the Lagos Island and Okokomaiko areas of Lagos State destroyed property including houses, a section of a police station, a diesel-laden truck, and a generator house belonging to a hotel.
The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, disclosed that the fire incidents were caused by negligence.
According to Adeseye, the first incident which occurred around 8 am, gutted a three-storey building in the popular Docemo market on the Lagos Island area of the state leaving the top floor area of the building destroyed.
