Fire destroys property worth millions in Lagos in multiple incidents
Fire outbreaks in Lagos over a 24-hour period on Sunday destroyed properties worth millions of naira in separate incidents across the city.
The affected locations include: Shops at Oshodi Resettlement Market, Oshodi.
A one-storey residential building on Ogunsami Street, Surulere.
A one-storey building with four two-bedroom flats on NEPA Road, Alaba Rago, Ojo.
Oshodi Resettlement Market Fire
The fire at the Oshodi Resettlement Market started around 10 p.m. on Sunday, affecting two shops in a two-storey shopping complex.
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed that:
One shop suffered 50% damage, while the other was slightly affected.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
The Lagos Fire and Rescue Service, along with other emergency responders, prevented the fire from spreading to other shops and nearby buildings.
Ogunsami Street, Surulere Fire
Another fire broke out at 8 p.m. in a one-storey residential building on Ogunsami Street.
An eyewitness reported that the fire, which began in one of the top-floor rooms, quickly spread to adjoining rooms. Emergency responders salvaged the ground floor and parts of the building.
The building’s frontal section and the ground floor were saved.
No casualties or injuries were recorded.
NEPA Road, Alaba Rago Fire
At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, fire engulfed a one-storey building comprising four two-bedroom flats on NEPA Road, Alaba Rago, Ojo.
Although the cause of the fire remains unknown, swift intervention by emergency responders contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building and nearby structures.
Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu described the incidents as “unfortunate,” attributing them to negligence by residents. He emphasized the importance of safety precautions to prevent future occurrences.
Despite the extensive damage, no lives were lost, and no injuries were reported in any of the incidents.
