Former Speaker of the United States House, Nancy Pelosi, has slammed Donald Trump over the pardons issued to “those who violently attacked the capitol and law enforcement officers” on January 6, 2021.
She shared her position in a statement posted on her X handle via @Speakerpelosi.
“Tonight, the President announced pardons and commutations of sentences for those who violently attacked the Capitol and law enforcement officers on January 6th,” she wrote.
“The President’s actions are an outrageous insult to our justice system and the heroes who suffered physical scars and emotional trauma as they protected the Capitol, the Congress and the Constitution.”
She stated, “It is shameful that the President has decided to make one of his top priorities the abandonment and betrayal of police officers who put their lives on the line to stop an attempt to subvert the peaceful transfer of power.
“Despite the President’s decision, we must always remember the extraordinary courage and valor of the law enforcement heroes who stood in the breach and ensured that democracy survived on that dark day.”

Trump earlier signed pardons for approximately 1,500 defendants who were charged with crimes stemming from the riot at the U.S. Capitol, fulfilling a promise he made in December to act quickly and pardon them.
“The Attorney General shall administer and effectuate the immediate issuance of certificates of pardon to all individuals described in section (b) above, and shall ensure that all individuals convicted of offenses related to events that occurred at or near the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, who are currently held in prison are released immediately.
“The Bureau of Prisons shall immediately implement all instructions from the Department of Justice regarding this directive,” a post on the White House website announcing the pardons read.
“I further direct the Attorney General to pursue dismissal with prejudice to the government of all pending indictments against individuals for their conduct related to the events at or near the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021. The Bureau of Prisons shall immediately implement all instructions from the Department of Justice regarding this directive,” the statement on the government website further read.
The January 6 attacks took place two months after Donald Trump was defeated in his bid for re-election in 2020.
It was reported that five persons died from the incident with many persons injured.
