FG sends important notice to Abuja residents over tremor
The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) has reassured residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, that the earth tremors pose no major threat.
In a statement released on Wednesday, NGSA Director-General, Professor Olusegun Ige, explained that the tremors, which occurred between September 13 and 17, have been closely monitored and are of low intensity.
The agency’s seismic monitoring station in Katampe recorded multiple tremors, with the frequency and intensity peaking on September 16.
These ground movements are attributed to accumulated stress along fault lines in the region, which triggered the seismic events.
The most affected areas include Mpape, Katampe, and Maitama, but the NGSA has assured residents that the tremors range from weak to light on the Modified Mercalli Scale, with minimal risk.
On-the-spot assessments have been conducted, and the agency remains vigilant, offering real-time monitoring to provide immediate updates if necessary.
Residents are urged to remain calm as the NGSA continues to keep a close watch on any significant developments.
“Six of these events were captured on the 14th of September, while over 21 events were captured on the 15th with higher intensities. More than twenty events were recorded on the 16th of September. The intensity and frequency of the tremor appear to increase from the 13th to the 16th September. There are a few weak events recorded today, 17th September.
“Preliminary analysis of the waveforms showed that the sources of the ground motions are less than 5 km away from the monitoring station,” the NGSA statement read in part.
