FG reveals date for next minimum wage increment
The Nigerian government has announced a new policy to shorten the review period for the national minimum wage.
Instead of waiting five years, the review will now happen every two years.
The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, shared this update during a visit to Abia State.
She explained that the change is meant to help workers deal with the rising cost of living.
“We are not going to allow minimum wage review to be forever.
“It used to be about five years, but now, in three years’ time, which is less than two years, we will also review the minimum wage,” Onyejeocha said.
This announcement follows a suggestion from the Trade Union Congress for yearly reviews to handle inflation, which was 34.60 percent in November 2024.
Last year, the government set the minimum wage at N70,000 and promised to review it regularly.
The new plan aims to keep wages more in line with current economic realities.
