FG release new minimum age for university admissions
The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the reinstatement of the 16-year minimum age requirement for admission into tertiary institutions.
Education Minister Morufu Tunji Alausa revealed the new policy during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.
This move reverses the earlier decision made by Tahir Mamman, the former Education Minister, who had set the minimum age at 18 in July.
After facing opposition from key stakeholders, including vice-chancellors and rectors, Mamman adjusted his position, allowing 16-year-olds for the 2024/2025 academic session.
However, he stated that future admissions would revert to the age of 18.
Alausa has now firmly implemented the 16-year-old age limit, stressing that this change is essential for reducing the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria.
Dr. Alausa clarified that the previously established 18-year age limit was based on interpretations within the National Policy on Education.
Alausa said, “We will not be going forward with the 18-years admission benchmark. We will go for 16 years and we are going to meet with JAMB and others on that. There will also be exceptions for the gifted students. Eighteen-years is not part of our policy again.’’
He also highlighted the importance of practical training in the education system to better prepare students for employment opportunities.
The minister affirmed that tertiary institutions will focus more on hands-on learning, with a 80/20 split favouring practical skills over theoretical knowledge.
Additionally, Alausa confirmed the continued suspension of degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo, aimed at tackling fraudulent academic credentials.
This policy aims to strengthen the integrity of Nigeria’s education system.
