FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MOVES TO ACCELERATE SDGs AMONG NIGERIAN STUDENTS
APPOINTS AMB TIMOTHY NWACHUKWU AS DIRECTOR, SDG NATIONAL STUDENTS COUNCIL.
In a significant move to accelerate the achievement of the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria, the Federal Government through the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students Engagement, Hon Comr. Sunday Asefon has appointed Amb. Timothy Nwachukwu LLB, as the Director, SDG National Students Council. This strategic appointment underscores the government’s commitment to engage the youth, particularly students, in driving sustainable development across the nation.
The SDGs, a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, provide a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet. They range from ending poverty and hunger to ensuring quality education and climate action. Nigeria, like other countries worldwide, has committed to achieving these goals by 2030.
Hon. Asefon stated that for Nigeria to make progress in implementing the SDGs, the support and active participation of students cannot be overemphasized. “As the next generation of leaders, students have a crucial role to play. They must not only be aware of the SDGs but be empowered to champion their realization in their communities and campuses,” he emphasized.
Amb. Timothy Nwachukwu who doubles as the Technical Assistant on Communication, Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students Engagement, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this role. Known for his dedication to advocacy, youth empowerment and sustainable development, he has been instrumental in various initiatives aimed at advancing the SDGs in Nigeria. His appointment is expected to galvanize students across the country to take a more active role in achieving the SDGs.
“Students are key drivers of social change. We shall work tirelessly to build their capacities so they can effectively advocate for the SDGs and pioneer innovative solutions to SDG-challenges in Nigeria as well as embark on sensitization and mobilization tours to tertiary institutions nationwide.” Amb. Nwachukwu said. He disclosed plans for a national SDG summit where student representatives will gather to share ideas and strategies to accelerate the localisation of the UN Agenda 2030.
The appointment of Amb. Timothy Nwachukwu as the Director of the SDG National Students Council signals the Federal Government’s commitment to engage and empower students in the pursuit of a sustainable and prosperous future for all Nigerians. As the country moves closer to the 2030 target, the active participation of students will undoubtedly play a crucial role in realizing this vision.
