Data available on Open Treasury Portal, a public payments portal of the federal government shows that N5.642 billion was spent on erosion and flooding control by the federal government in the first six months of 2024.

Amid flooding and erosion ravaging the country, a review of Govspend and Open Treasury portal data has raised concerns about priority spendings of the Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government.

Data available on Open Treasury Portal, a public payments portal of the federal government shows that N5.642 billion was spent on erosion and flooding control by the federal government in the first six months of 2024.

This is despite the fact that the sum of N167billion was budgeted for the same purpose in the 2024 fiscal year.

Review of Govspend data however shows that in two months between May and July, 2024, the Tinubu-led Presidency spent N14 billion on Renovation of Presidential Quarters, Honorarium, Presidential Trips, Purchase of Forex.

The review shows that on 19th of July, the Presidency spent N150 million to pay for Presidential trips and other related expenses.

This development is even as flooding has been said to be responsible for 205 deaths across 2 states while 225,169 persons have been said to be displaced from their homes.

There have been concerns on the willingness of the government to spend on erosion and flooding control despite billions received as ecological fund and despite the devastating impact of flooding.

Not just the federal government is guilty of this negligence, but even the state governments.
