#EndBadGovernment: Survey shows overwhelming support for right to protest in Nigeria
A recent survey conducted by the Research and Document Department of Prisoners’ Rehabilitation And Welfare Action, PRAWA, has revealed that an overwhelming majority of Nigerians believe that the right to protest is essential for a functioning society.
According to the PRAWA report, “The right to protest is very important for a functioning society, a large majority, 72 per cent believe that the right to protest is very important, while 16.66 per cent consider it important.”
The survey, which gathered data on the general perception of protests in 2024, found that only a small percentage of respondents four per cent believe that the right to protest was unimportant, with a mere 0.67 per cent considering it very unimportant.
“The data indicates that the right to protest is widely regarded as important among the respondents,” the report stated.
When asked about the frequency of peaceful protests in Nigeria, 34.67 per cent of respondents said they occur “sometimes,” while 19.33 per cent believe they happen “rarely.”
Conversely, 14.00 per cent think peaceful protests occur “often,” and 6.67 per cent believe they “always” happen.
“The survey shows that Nigerians value their right to protest and want to see more peaceful protests in the country,”
This indicated that “It’s time for the government to listen to the people and address their grievances.”
