Ekiti unveils PIN for okada riders to boost security
The Ekiti State Government on Thursday launched Personal Identification Number and reflective jackets for commercial motorcycle operators, in a bid to enhance security and regulate their operations in the state.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Kehinde Ajobiewe, said the initiative “is designed to monitor and track the activities of okada riders and tricycle operators, ensuring accountability and reducing criminal activities associated with unregistered operators.”
Ajobiewe spoke in Ado Ekiti at the launch of the PIN and jacket, which was attended by stakeholders in the transport and security sectors.
At the event were the Federal Road Safety Corps Commander, Olusola Joseph; Director General, Homeland Intelligence Agency, Dr Adetuberu Oludotun; chairman of the okada riders’ association, Kunle Asaolu, and the chair of tricycle operators, Mr Akinola Talabi.
The commissioner said the PIN, visibly displayed on the reflective jackets of registered riders, also “serves as a crucial database for the state government.”
The commissioner said any rider who failed to register and obtain the jacket would face sanction, adding that “the government approved this initiative so that residents of the state can be safer.
“We have put this measure in place to curb insecurity. The reflective jacket is not for show, it is for proper identification, to know who is who.”
Ajobiewe reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, saying, “The introduction of the PIN system will help in identifying genuine operators while discouraging the use of motorcycles for criminal activities.”
He urged okada riders and tricycle operators in the state to comply with the directive and ensure proper registration to avoid sanctions.
