EFCC Probes Contract Awards, Procurements In Over 700 Nigerian Ministries, Departments, Agencies

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has established a directorate to probe contract awards and procurements within Nigerian ministries, departments and agencies.
The Chairman of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, made this known at a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) leadership conference in Lagos on Friday, stating that the agency is committed to rooting out financial misconduct and ensuring accountability in public service.
The EFCC boss said that the agency, under his watch, has recovered over N200 billion.
He said a directorate was established in the agency about three months ago to investigate over 700 Ministries, Districts and Agencies (MDAs) and delve into their processes for awarding contracts and procurements.
He said, “We will examine the past five years: how many contracts have you awarded, what processes did you follow, where are the evidence of execution of these projects? We want to see these one after the other.”
Olukayode highlighted the significant challenge facing the agency, noting that with a staff of fewer than 4,700, they are tasked with investigating a staggering 700 ministries, departments, and agencies across the country.
Furthermore, he emphasised the agency’s limited capacity, revealing that only a small fraction of the workforce – less than 40% – are trained investigators, while a mere 25% are prosecutors.
“In addition to these over 700 MDAs, I have 36 states in the federation, and 7,774 local governments. Now, they say they should be releasing money to the local governments directly. These are the challenges,” he said.
