Local media sources suggest on Thursday that the death toll could rise to 30 as the search continues. The landslides, triggered by heavy rains on Wednesday night, struck the mountainous district of Bulambuli, about 280 kilometres east of Kampala, a region prone to such disasters.
A journalist in the area told The Associated Press that local officials had stated an excavator would be brought in to assist with the rescue efforts, but mud-covered roads and ongoing rainfall were hindering progress.
The affected area, spanning 50 acres, contains homesteads and farmlands located downhill.
Photos and videos shared on social media showed people digging through the mud in search of victims.
Many homes were completely submerged, with only the roofs visible above the ground. The Daily Monitor reported that most of the bodies recovered so far were children.
On Wednesday, the Prime Minister’s office issued a disaster alert, highlighting that heavy rains had caused widespread road closures.
Additionally, two rescue boats capsized during a mission on the River Nile, where the Pakwach bridge had been submerged.
