Don’t Become Nuisance Like Simon Ekpa, Gov Nwifuru Begs Ebonyi Scholarship Students
Governor Francis Nwifuru has cautioned over 200 Ebonyi students embarking on postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom not to emulate Simon Ekpa, urging them to remain focused and loyal to their roots.
Speaking at the Wilberforce Chuba Okadigbo International Airport in Ezza South during the launch of the State Scholarship Scheme, Nwifuru reminded the students of their responsibility as ambassadors of Ebonyi State.
He reiterated that the scheme’s aim is to benefit 8,000 Ebonyi citizens before the end of his administration.
Addressing the students, he said, “Your actions, words, and achievements will reflect not only on you but on our collective identity as Ebonyi people. At all times, in your private and public undertakings, be guided by this. We expect you to graduate on record time and return to contribute your quota towards the development of Ebonyi State.”
Nwifuru also drew a sharp contrast between the students and Simon Ekpa, who, according to him, failed to honour the opportunity he was given abroad.
“Your case must be different from that of Simon Ekpa, who, instead of reciprocating the gesture of being sent abroad for scholarship, turned around to become a nuisance to the entire country,” he stated.
He encouraged the students to immerse themselves in their studies, embrace diverse cultures, and build networks that would benefit their growth while staying focused on their ultimate mission at home.
“Upon completing your studies, we expect you to return to our state and channel your expertise into sectors that need your innovation, creativity, and leadership,” Nwifuru added, citing areas like education, healthcare, infrastructure, and agriculture as crucial to the state’s development.
The governor expressed gratitude to the team behind the scholarship initiative, describing it as a foundation for a brighter future anchored on the People’s Charter of Needs Agenda.
In a final charge to the scholars, he said, “Never forget where you come from. Let the aspirations of our people inspire you, and let the challenges we face as a state fuel your determination to succeed. While there, do not forget we are counting on you to return to our state as leaders, innovators, and agents of change.”
Nwifuru urged the students to remain steadfast, warning them not to be distracted by the allure of overseas luxury.
He assured them that their success would pave the way for others to benefit from similar opportunities.
