DG Imo CPC Destroy Counterfeit, Expired Products In Owerri.
The Imo State Consumer Protection Council (CPC) under the leadership of Hon.Mrs Obioma Okafor, on Tuesday 8th November 2022, destroyed substandard, expired products in Owerri, the Imo state capital.
The Director General of Imo CPC, Hon. Mrs Obioma Okafor, who supervised the exercise, said the destruction was part of the efforts of the state government to rid of from Imo market unwholesome products that is harmful to human body and engender public confidence on the agency to protect consumers.
Speaking during the exercise, Mrs Obioma Okafor said the public destruction of spurious products would eliminate the risk of reintroduction into the markets. It is a proof of Imo CPC’s resolve to protect consumer’s health or interest. ” The activities of fakers had robbed Nigerian markets of public confidence.
Also, the DG Imo CPC noted that under her watch, the Council would stop at nothing to rid the markets of spurious products.
She therefore appealed to consumers to be very careful of what they buy or consume while calling on the manufacturers, business men and women to place the lives of Nigerian above other considerations.
She regretted that many had ended up losing their lives as a result of consuming fake or expired products.
The products destroyed includes some expensive fake hot drinks like Glenfiddich 21 years, 501, Hennessy VSOP, Royal Challenge, non-alcoholic beverages, assorted beer, cosmetics, plastic minerals, pharmaceutical products like antibiotics and other consumables.
According to Imo CPC boss, products counterfeiting is an act of economic sabotage and a serious threat to public health. She further stated that Imo CPC was proactively tackling the challenges by engaging traditional, religious and leaders of academic institutions to sensitize the public.
