President Bola Tinubu has hailed the Supreme Court’s ruling on Local Government autonomy as a significant stride, affirming the spirit and intent of Nigeria’s Constitution regarding the statutory rights of council residents.

He emphasised that ineffective local government administration has long hindered the nation’s progress, highlighting the critical need for robust governance at the grassroots level of socio-political structure.

Tinubu urged local council leaders to prioritize people-centered service delivery, ensuring that Nigerians at the grassroots level benefit substantially.

Under his Renewed Hope Agenda, Tinubu stressed inclusivity across all societal divides, emphasising accountability and service delivery to improve the lives of Nigerians, particularly the less privileged.

He stated: “This judgment reinforces our commitment to restructuring our country and economy through legitimate means, empowering elected local officials to manage community resources transparently and effectively.”

Tinubu underscored the Supreme Court’s decision as historic, affirming local governments’ constitutional rights to financial autonomy and reinforcing Nigeria’s federal structure for nationwide development.

” I commend the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) for his diligence and patriotic effort on this important assignment.

“My administration remains committed to protecting the principles of the charter governing citizens, institutions of government, arms, and tiers of government in furtherance of building an efficient and performance-driven governance system that works for every Nigerian,” Tinubu added.
