Despite global outcry Sokoto Governor signs controversial Law reducing Sultan’s power
Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has approved the Sokoto Local Government and Chieftaincy Law, which removes Alhaji Sa`ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto’s authority to appoint district and village heads within the state. The legislation sparked widespread controversy nationwide due to significant opposition.
Addressing the media on Thursday following the endorsement of six Executive Bills recently passed by the state House of Assembly, Governor Aliyu clarified that the amendments aimed to eliminate ambiguities and inconsistencies with the nation’s Constitution. He emphasized that the revised laws were designed not to target any specific individual or group but to enhance governance standards.
Aliyu said, “It is well-known that in every society, laws are enacted and amended to suit the needs of the time and the interests of the governed, in line with current circumstances.
“In Nigeria, we have witnessed a series of constitutional amendments to give the country laws that ensure peace, tranquility, and socio-political development.
“Some reactions were politically motivated, while others were made ignorantly without proper inquiry into the details and intentions of the amendments.
“I appreciate our Ulama for their concern, but remind them that they represent Allah’s Messenger. They should not allow lazy politicians to use them for political gains.”
The governor underscored that by signing the amended laws, his administration affirms its commitment to upholding the rule of law. He assured citizens that any legislation enacted or revised under his leadership would align with the nation’s constitution and reflect the aspirations of the people.
“We will replace any law that does not serve our people’s interests with one that safeguards their welfare,” Aliyu affirmed.
He expressed appreciation to the state House of Assembly members for their responsible handling of the amendments, describing them as mature and patriotic. The governor reiterated his administration’s dedication to collaborating with traditional rulers and the Sultanate Council for the benefit of Sokoto State and Nigeria.
Aliyu also thanked the people of Sokoto for their steadfast support and called for continued assistance to achieve the government’s development objectives.
Earlier, Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Alhaji Kabiru Ibrahim (APC-Kware), highlighted that the passage of these bills underscores the government’s commitment to improving the well-being of citizens. Ibrahim noted that the Assembly facilitated a more inclusive and participatory legislative process by engaging relevant stakeholders in discussions on the bills.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the amended bills covered various areas such as the Arabic and Islamic Board, Rural Roads and Land Tenancy, Zakkat and Endowment Agency, Prohibition of Discrimination against Persons with Disability, and the Local Government Consolidated Law 2009.
