Crisis Brews In Enugu After Deputy Governor, Commissioners Allegedly Block Announcement Of Alor-Agu Igweship Election Results

A major political controversy is unfolding in Enugu State as reports emerge that key government officials, including the Deputy Governor, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, and Commissioners Emeka Ajogwu (Special Duties) and Okey Ogbodo (Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs), are allegedly obstructing the formal announcement of the Alor-Agu Igweship election results.
The election, which was held on March 25, 2025, at Community Secondary School, Alor-Agu, was widely regarded as free, fair, and credible by observers, community leaders, and the Igbo-Eze South Local Government chairman, Barr. Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze.
Also, members of the Enugu State House of Assembly led by chairman House committee on Chieftaincy, Hon. Malachy Okechi and a team from the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs led by Mrs Ogochukwu Ozoagu monitored the process.
Security agencies, including the Nigerian police, the army, and Forest Guards, were present to ensure orderliness. After the votes were counted in the presence of all stakeholders, Christian Ugwuanyi emerged victorious with 694 votes, defeating Okwudili Omeke, who polled 622 votes.
Shockingly, despite the clear outcome, the Enugu State Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Affairs has refused to formally declare the winner, fuelling suspicions of political interference.
According to multiple sources within the community, Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai (from Ezimo, Udenu LGA), Commissioner Emeka Ajogwu (from Unadu, Igbo-Eze South), and Deacon Okey Ogbodo are allegedly working behind the scenes to suppress the official announcement.
Community leaders and youth groups in Alor-Agu are questioning why the results, which were witnessed and accepted by all present, have not been made public.
Many believe that high-level political interests are trying to manipulate the process to impose a different candidate against the will of the people.
Critics argue that the delay is not accidental but a deliberate plot to undermine the democratic process in Alor-Agu.
It is alleged that certain power brokers within the state government prefer a different candidate, Hon. Okwudili Omeke and are attempting to pressure the ministry into a compromise.
A respected elder from the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “We all witnessed the election; it was peaceful and transparent. Christian Ugwuanyi won fair and square. But some people in government want to use their influence to twist the outcome. This is an insult to the people of Alor-Agu and a threat to democracy.”
Anger is growing within the Alor-Agu community as youths and traditional leaders are mobilising to demand the immediate declaration of the results.
Some groups are threatening mass protests if the Enugu State Government continues to delay justice.
Many are calling on Governor Peter Mbah to intervene immediately and ensure that the ministry does not succumb to undue influence.
They insist that any attempt to alter the election results would be a grave injustice and could lead to unrest in the area.
As tension builds, all eyes are on the Enugu State government to see whether it will uphold transparency and fairness or allow political interests to override the will of the people.
