Court Sentences 27-Year-Old Cult Member In Ogun State To Seven Years Imprisonment
Ishola, a resident of Otitoloju Street, Mile 2, Along Ayetoro Road in Abeokuta, was convicted on Friday on a one-count charge of membership in an unlawful society.
A27-year-old man, Afeeze Ishola, has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment by an Ogun Special Anti-Cultism Court in Abeokuta for his membership in the Eiye Confraternity, a banned cult group.
Ishola, a resident of Otitoloju Street, Mile 2, Along Ayetoro Road in Abeokuta, was convicted on Friday on a one-count charge of membership in an unlawful society.
During the trial, the prosecutor, Inspector Olaide Rawlings, revealed that the offence occurred on September 2, 2022, at around 4:30 a.m. at Opara II Estate, Rounder, Abeokuta.
Rawlings told the court that Ishola was apprehended by a community security guard who had been monitoring the area.
“Ishola was found wandering the community when the security man stopped him for questioning,” she explained.
The prosecutor disclosed that Ishola admitted to being on the run from a rival cult group attempting to kill him. He was subsequently handed over to a police officer residing in the neighborhood.
Rawlings further informed the court that the defendant confessed during interrogation to being a member of the Eiye Confraternity.
The offence contravenes Section 34 and is punishable under Section 36 of the Prohibition of Forcible Occupation of Landed Properties, Armed Robbery, Kidnapping, Cultism, and Other Anti-Violence and Related Offences Law, 2016.
Magistrate J.A. Akan ruled that the prosecution had proven the convict’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
He further held that the evidence presented by the prosecution was credible and sentenced the convict to seven years in prison without the option of a fine.
