Court Grants N2M Bail to Man Accused of Attempting to Kill Policewoman

A 38-year-old suspect, Adekunle Rotimi, was on Tuesday arraigned before Chief Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara for allegedly attempting to kill a policewoman within the court premises.

The police prosecutor, Anifowose Saheed, informed the court that Rotimi attempted to kill Policewoman Babatunde Omotayo after his escape attempt on February 18, 2025, was thwarted by her. Saheed claimed that Rotimi pinned Omotayo inside a fish pond, intending to strangle her.

Rotimi, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges of attempted escape and attempted murder.

Defence counsel, Dauda Oyewale, requested bail on liberal terms, arguing that the alleged offences were bailable. On the other hand, the prosecutor opposed bail, stating that granting it would jeopardize the trial. He explained that the defendant, who was remanded for unlawful possession of firearms, had previously attempted to escape and even confessed to trying to kill the policewoman who thwarted his plan.

The defendant’s counsel dismissed the prosecutor’s concerns, arguing that they were speculative and had no legal merit.
