Court Grants Bail To 71-Year-Old Ex-Minister Alleged Fraud Case

A Pakistani court has reportedly granted the former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, bail in a case involving the alleged illegal sale of state gifts.

The 71-year-old politician has been imprisoned since August 2023 but his release remains uncertain due to numerous other cases against him, including charges of inciting violence against the state.
Salman Safdar, one of Khan’s lawyers, reportedly told newsmen that if the official bail order is received, Khan’s family and supporters will seek his release.
Safdar added that, to his knowledge, Khan has either been granted bail or acquitted in all other cases. The latest bail was granted by the Islamabad High Court in the Toshakhana (state treasury) case.
This case revolves around allegations that Khan and his wife illegally acquired and sold gifts worth over 140 million rupees ($501,000) that Khan received during his tenure as prime minister from 2018 to 2022.
The gifts allegedly included diamond jewelry and seven luxury watches, six of which were Rolexes. The most valuable item, a Rolex watch, was reportedly worth 85 million rupees ($305,000).
Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were previously handed 14-year sentences in connection with the same charges, following a separate three-year sentence given to Khan in another version of the case in late 2023. Both sentences have since been suspended on appeal.
Khan and Bushra deny the allegations, claiming the cases are politically motivated to keep him incarcerated.
Bushra Bibi was released last month after spending several months in the same prison as Khan.
