A non-governmental organization known as ” Alliances for Africa” in partnership with the Imo State Committee on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls, (ISCEVAWG), Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIFWA) and other partners, within the week called on Imo Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma’s to create and allocate budget towards the full enforcement and implementation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) bill in Imo state.
This call was made during a joint Press conference on the need for Imo State to see the need to create and allocate budget towards the full enforcement and implementation of the VAPP Act.
In a release signed by the Executive Director, Alliances for Africa; Iheoma Obibi and Imo State Coordinator; Committee on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls; Marjorie Ezihe, says, the group is a non-governmental human rights, peace and sustainable development organization that advocates for the protection of human rights and promotion of women participation in leadership and governance.
“The VAPP Act is the videly accepted piece of law that transcends the penal and criminal code of guaranteeing safety safety for survivors of violence due to its expansion of definition of rape”.
The group opined, that when implemented, the VAPP Act will address all forms of violence against women and girls; including sexual, physical, emotional, social and harmful cultural practices perpetrated by state and non- state actors.
“We implore our Governor, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma to create an active Gender- Based Violence (GBV) rapid response team that will see to the provision of immediate survivor centred services”, they beseeched.
The programme which took place at the Rockview Hotels, Owerri, Monday, had in attendance different advocacy groups; including traditional rulers from the state.
